The Legacy

Two Men. One Standard.

The Visionary

David Koechel

David Koechel emerged in the 1960s, at a time when Christian publishing lagged behind the broader marketplace in visual quality and design. His first book cover commission came from Gary Johnson at Bethany House Publishers in the mid-1960s — and numerous publishers soon followed. Where others accepted the prevailing standard, Koechel saw beyond it. Through discipline and conviction, he introduced clarity, structure, and aesthetic excellence — bringing dignity and strength to the printed page.

In 1967, Pat Zondervan brought David their entire backlist to re-cover — a defining moment that truly launched his career. The phrase "that's a Koechel cover" became the design standard for Christian publishers and designers across the industry. He went on to produce thousands of book covers, ads, corporate identities, and Bible logos — including the original NIV logo, one of the most recognized marks in Christian publishing.

He is also an industry expert on papers, inks, fabrics, foils, and publishing trends — always on the cutting edge of technology — ensuring that what is created is not only seen, but felt. His clients included virtually every major Christian publisher: Zondervan, Bethany House, Tyndale, Harvest House, Word Publishing, Thomas Nelson, and many more. He designed covers for bestselling authors including Josh McDowell, Stormie Omartian, Max Lucado, Dutch Sheets, Kay Arthur, and Ruth Bell Graham.

"His work does not decorate the message. It serves it."

The Executor

John E. Peterson

John E. Peterson brings a different strength — steady, grounded, unwavering. As co-owner of Create Design Publish LLC, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he ensured that the firm's vision was not just imagined but delivered. Where Koechel sees the vision, Peterson ensures it stands. He brings structure, discipline, and execution — turning ideas into reality consistently, reliably, without compromise.

He builds systems that hold under pressure. He creates order where complexity exists. Under his leadership, the firm expanded beyond graphic design to offer expert writing and editorial services, integrated marketing strategies, and full production management — covering the complete spectrum of design and literary needs under one roof. He ensures that excellence is not occasional, but repeatable — known for doing things correctly rather than quickly, for choosing what lasts over what is easy.

"Excellence is not occasional, but repeatable."

Together, they built something neither could alone.

Their partnership is not accidental. It is aligned. Koechel brings vision. Peterson ensures execution. Together they built what became Create Design Publish LLC — a firm incorporated in 1978 and operating for over 30 years — into one of the most respected creative forces in Christian publishing. Their firm served virtually every major Christian publishing house and a host of ministries, consistently setting the tone for the highest design standards in the industry.

Koechel developed lifetime friendships with many of the industry’s most influential leaders — among them Bob Hawkins Sr., Bill Bright, Kay Arthur, the Zondervans, Ruth Bell Graham, Gary and Carol Johnson, Kathryn Kuhlman, Jack Countryman, and Rolf Zettersten. When publishers needed advice and a creative spark to get a project underway, David was the one they called.

They prove that design is not optional, that presentation matters, that excellence requires both vision and discipline. In 2011, ECPA honored David Koechel with the Jordon Lifetime Achievement Award — the first time the award had ever been given to a graphic design professional. Their legacy is not found in recognition, but in results.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions publishers, authors, and ministries ask most often.

We offer three core disciplines: Book Cover Design — creating covers that communicate the heart of a manuscript with typographic precision and visual authority; Bible Identity Systems — developing the complete visual language for a Bible edition, from cover through interior; and Production Consulting — guiding publishers through press specifications, paper selection, binding, and print-run decisions to achieve the highest quality within budget.

Our clients include major Christian publishers such as Zondervan, Tyndale House, Thomas Nelson, Bethany House, and Harvest House, as well as independent ministries and first-time authors who want their work designed to the same standard as the bestselling titles on the shelf. We work with both large print runs and short-run specialty editions.

A standard book cover project runs four to six weeks from initial brief to press-ready files. Bible identity systems — which encompass cover, spine, interior typography, and brand standards — typically require eight to twelve weeks. Timeline depends on revision rounds and the complexity of the visual system required.

David Koechel and John E. Peterson pioneered the idea that a Bible edition deserves the same design discipline as any premium trade book. Every typographic decision — column width, leading, running heads, section markers — is made in service of readability and reverence. The result is a Bible that feels authoritative in the hand and inviting on the page.

Yes. We welcome authors who are publishing independently and want their book to stand alongside traditionally published titles in quality and presence. We provide the same level of craft and attention regardless of print run size.

Use the Contact form below to introduce yourself and describe your project. Include the title, genre, target audience, and any visual references you admire. We will respond within two business days to schedule an initial consultation.
